Searching for Baryons with Chandra
نویسندگان
چکیده
At low redshifts, measurements of the total baryon content in stars, atomic and molecular hydrogen, and cluster gas fall a factor of two to four below the baryon density derived from observed light-element ratios and nucleosynthesis arguments. A possible hiding place for a significant fraction of the missing baryons is in the warm/hot gas at temperatures T= 10 − 10K. We present predictions of the contribution to the soft X-ray background from warm/hot gas emission calculated using new hydrodynamical simulations and discuss the possibility of detecting the spectral signature of this gas using the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

Chandra Detection of X-ray Absorption from Local Warm/hot Gas
Recently, with the Chandra X-ray Telescope we have detected several local X-ray absorption lines along lines-of-sight towards distant quasars. These absorption lines are produced by warm/hot gas located in local intergalactic space and/or in our Galaxy. I will present our observations and discuss the origin of the X-ray absorption and its implications in probing the warm/hot component of local ...
متن کاملConstraints on MOND from the lensing cluster MS2137-23
The cluster of galaxies MS2137-23 presents the most constrained lensing configuration of gravitational images ever detected in a distant cluster of galaxies. With a set of two arc systems with known redshifts and many other arclets spread between ≈ 30 h−1 kpc and 1 h−1 Mpc, MS2137-27 is well suited to probe its mass profile and to challenge theoretical expectations from CDM scenario with more s...
متن کاملSearching for the Missing Baryons in the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium
We discuss physical properties and the baryonic content of the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) at low redshifts. Cosmological simulations predict that the WHIM contains a large fraction of the baryons at z = 0 in the form of highly-ionized gas at temperatures between 105 and 107 K. Using high-resolution ultraviolet spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and t...
متن کاملConstraints on the interaction between dark matter and Baryons from cooling flow clusters.
Other nongravitational heating processes are needed to resolve the disagreement between the absence of cool gas components in the centers of galaxy clusters revealed recently by Chandra and XMM observations and the expectations of conventional radiative cooling models. We propose that the interaction between dark matter and baryonic matter may act as an alternative for the reheating of intraclu...
متن کاملView of the z > 0 Warm – Hot Intergalactic Medium Toward Markarian 421 Rik
The recent detection with Chandra of two warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments toward Mrk 421 by Nicastro et al. provides a measurement of the bulk of the “missing baryons” in the nearby universe. Since Mrk 421 is a bright X-ray source, it is also frequently observed by the XMM–Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) for calibration purposes. Using all available archived XMM obser...
